Writing Class

Okay so I went to this writing class at my library, and it was actually very helpful. The author that came to talk to us was Eric Luper, and he actually had some very good tips, including a list of No-Nonsense rules for writing, and awesome writing prompts. He also suggested keeping a journal or a blog of some sort. Oh hey look at this, it’s a blog…. well isn’t that funny. So what was the point of this? I really have no idea again, but if you like to write he did suggest a writer’s camp at Skidmore College in New York, and that he found his agent at a convention in Lake Placid. I thought this would be interesting information for anyone.

I said last time that I was working on a Camp Nanowrimo project, but that’s just one of many, I will code the rest of my word count widgets on my off time when I get the chance. August is definitely my month for finishing Nanowrimo project 2010, and then in November it’s Nanowrimo 2011. I’ll keep you all updated though I don’t know who reads it. For my summaries and other fun stuff, my nanowrimo site is http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/483788 , and my Camp Nanowrimo is http://www.campnanowrimo.org/campers/booklover900. Have fun!!

Camp Nanowrimo

Alright so the goal of Nanowrimo is to write 50,000 words in a month, but this month has 31 days. So I started a week late like I usually do, and I have found that as i continue to do this my total word count goes down… It’s very weird. Anyway what’s the point of this? Nothing really I was just really bored.

I guess I should stop rambling about nothing important. But first I will say this, Magic Beyond Words: The JK Rowling Story was really very inspiring and if you need inspiration for anything I suggest that you watch it because I’m sure you will find it interesting regardless of whether you are a Harry Potter fan or not. That is what got me a new burst of inspiration for my Camp Nanowrimo story, which i hope will turn into something more than a stupid project that doesn’t end up going anywhere. If it does end up with some sort of following then I will probably make another post and share where you can find it or something… If you’re interested please say so!! I would love hear it an might just put a sneak peak on this site or my LiveJournal. This project is what the word count if for. I’ll make another one for the other project that I will be finishing in August.

Anyway, to all of you writers out there have fun writing your hearts out!! And I suggest Camp Nanowrimo for August, or actual Nanowrimo for November. Where can those be found? here: http://www.nanowrimo.org or http://www.campnanowrimo.org .

Monster High

Monster High (Monster High #1)Monster High by Lisi Harrison
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is about a score of monsters that want desperately to live peacefully in a world of “normies” or normla people like us, (think muggles vs wizards). Some of them think that hiding out will solve all of their problems, but there are others that want normies to be okay with the fact that monsters exist. This book follows Frankie’s struggle to be accepted, and Mellody’s fight to fit in and save the boy she has come to love. Basically it is the perfect highschool drama, mixed with the perfect fantasy.

It is like one of those train wrecks that you can’t look away from and the drama will keep the pages turning faster than your eyes can move. I totally recommend this to anyone who likes the classic monsters and has a secret guilty pleasure in highschool drama cases.

Camp Nanowrimo

So the writing competition that I do every November is now offering a new opportunity to do Nanowrimo, just in the summer. This new opportunity is called Camp Nanowrimo. It is being offered in July and August this year, but the July one is already five days in. You can still sign up but I wouldn’t recommend it if you need all of the days to write. Now you’re probably thinking “Why would anyone be so crazy as to do this for three months? Isn’t one enough?”. Well the answer to that is, I am probably partially insane for doing this, but I find it quite fun. It is also really helpful if you are a nerd and feel like getting all of that creativity hiding in you flowing.

The site for this is http://www.campnanowrimo.org and it is not as good as regular nanowrimo only because it is brand new. I suggest you wait for August version because they say that the full site will be up and running. And if you have friends who would be interested in it you should totally get them to join! Also if you have any extra cash that you feel like donating, they accept tax deductable donations that will help make the site all that much better.

Pottermore

Alright so the amazing J.K. Rowling announced that she is giving the Harry Potter fans a safe site to be a fan. It’s to be kid friendly so all the pervs that happen to happen upon this don’t be PERVS! Anyway, this site can be found at http://www.pottermore.com and she announced it on Youtube. So if you search for an account under J.K. Rowling you will probably find the video but if you don’t want to take FOREVER! to find it you can just find the link on http://www.mugglenet.com .

Now if you are just checking this out you might not know that I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan and I am SO EXCITED for this. It comes out as a fully functional site in October. And I really hope that I don’t get annoying comments bashing Harry Potter but feel free to discus this and voice your opinion. Especially if you are as excited for this as I am. Well have fun Potterheads and may Harry Potter live in your hearts for forever.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Okay so this is not meant to offend Suzanne Collins, but rather tear apart whoever invented the tense that she was writing in. I greatly dislike this tense, it’s like some imperfect present tense that just makes the book seem stiff and primative. It doesn’t seem like a person would think this way and it doesn’t seem all that realistic. It feels like a huge list of events and emotions and doesn’t seem to flow correctly. Now this could just be my preference and a wildly opinionated thing but I simply didn’t like it.

And then you have the characters. Because this book was from Katniss’s point of view and because of what I’ve already said about the tense making it seem unhuman, you can probably guess that I didn’t much like her. In my opinion she was a poor compilation of Bella from Twilight and Daine from Wild Magic. Other than that Peeta was just stupid and oblivious… That’s just about all I can say with out being horrific. The only two characters I actually liked were Haymitch and possibly Gale.

The only redeeming thing has to be the concept. It was a very good concept but just not well executed.

Jane Eyre

2011 movie poster

So our school took us to see Jane Eyre today for almost an entire day of school and it was AWESOME! Not only did we get to go see the movie but it was a private screening  just for us and I got to see it with my friends. It was an amazing movie! On a five star scale, in terms of movies, I would give it 4.5 stars. It fell short of 5 stars because it was hard to understand some of the actors at times and the sound was sometimes overwhelming. On the other hand as far as the book is concerned it was missing a lot and organized differently but that made it new and interesting.

So what am I trying to say? I’m trying to say that you should totally go see this movie and yes you should always read the book first. Not because you’ll get less from the movie than you would the book, but because the book is just so good, and such a classic. It’s really an amazing book, and then the movie will just make it all that much better. So go see it! Oh one thing I didn’t like at all was his beard in the end… It looked disgusting… *shudders* Anyway click the picture above to get to fandango if you feel like ordering tickets… (U.S. only I think).

Book Contest!

So Maggie Stiefvater is doing this contest where she’s giving away some of her books that she wants to get rid of and I really kind of want them, but she’s making us post a link to her blog. So what better place to post than here.

Her blog is http://maggiestiefvater.blogspot.com/2011/02/spring-cleaning-book-contest.html and she is the writer of The Wolves of Mercy Falls. I absolutely love that series and I would love to have some of her personal books.

Tortall and Other Lands Post 1

Tortall and Other Lands by Tamora Pierce, a short story collection

So I just got this book that I’ve been waiting for for a while now and I’m TOTALLY EXCITED TO READ IT! This book is a short story collection by Tamora Pierce about an awesome Universe that she created and the characters in it. My advice however is that before you read it you should read her other books. Now I’m assuming a complete list is needed well here are some websites you could find that on:

If my favorites are The Immortals series, and the Trickster’s couplet. I would suggest at least reading these before you read the new short story collection because there are two stories directly related to those specific series’. Or so it would seem based on the titles and the description, I shall check back once I’ve actually read them.
