The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Okay so this is not meant to offend Suzanne Collins, but rather tear apart whoever invented the tense that she was writing in. I greatly dislike this tense, it’s like some imperfect present tense that just makes the book seem stiff and primative. It doesn’t seem like a person would think this way and it doesn’t seem all that realistic. It feels like a huge list of events and emotions and doesn’t seem to flow correctly. Now this could just be my preference and a wildly opinionated thing but I simply didn’t like it.

And then you have the characters. Because this book was from Katniss’s point of view and because of what I’ve already said about the tense making it seem unhuman, you can probably guess that I didn’t much like her. In my opinion she was a poor compilation of Bella from Twilight and Daine from Wild Magic. Other than that Peeta was just stupid and oblivious… That’s just about all I can say with out being horrific. The only two characters I actually liked were Haymitch and possibly Gale.

The only redeeming thing has to be the concept. It was a very good concept but just not well executed.
