Review: Castle Rock on Hulu

This past weekend it snowed about two feet at my house, making the outside an undesirable place to be. Luckily, Hulu and Netflix have many many things that I have placed on my Watchlist. Unfortunately for my Watchlist Castle Rock was not one of them, meaning that Watchlist is still just as big as it was before. Now, Castle Rock hadn’t been on my watchlist previously because I hadn’t thought to put it on once it had come out. But on Friday someone had mentioned watching Castle Rock, thus started the weekend binge. I finished this series in two days, the fastest I’ve ever finished a series.

The series starts out with a sheriff of a small town searching the woods only to find a young boy standing in the middle of a frozen lake. The town the sheriff is from: Castle Rock, Maine; the year: 1991. Now, fast forward to 2018, it has been 27 years since the scene with the forest and we are now follow a man get ready for his day. He is retiring today, but his secret won’t let him. But he is not the focus of the story; his secret is. Can you believe that this is just the first half of the first episode?

This show definitely does suspense very well. But what do you expect from a series based off of the works of Stephen King? It keeps you captivated and intrigued the entire time. It keeps you guessing and makes you gasp. You will always think you know what’s going on but then suddenly be confused. It is very good at making you think. That being said, it’s not an easy series to understand on its own. If I hadn’t spent the entirety of last year reading It, I wouldn’t have understood most of what was going on. I also have background from other Stephen King Stories that I’ve either read, or watched as a show or a movie.

(Spoilers Ahead)

Without this background I wouldn’t have understood anything having to do with the hotel episodes. The episode where they brought in the rift and world traveling barely made sense as it was. Three entire character backstories would have made no sense at all. I’m still kind of confused by the episode about Henry’s mother. (It was cool that she played Carrie in the original movie though.) So over all I think that it’s a good show for the right audience but I don’t think it’s a show that anyone could watch and immediately get into.

This opinion is more solidified by the Syfy network show Haven (currently on Netflix). When I had started watching Haven I had just barely heard of Stephen King. I hadn’t read any of his books and I had only ever seen two of the movies made based on them. But when I watched Haven I wasn’t confused at all. Haven was its own story that could be followed without any other story. It was fun to try and find references to the other stories, but they weren’t an integral part of the main plot. (I almost made a terrible pun there, be proud that I didn’t.) It was a good introduction to the Stephen King universe.

The Heist by Janet Evanovich

The Heist (O'Hare and Fox, #1)The Heist by Janet Evanovich

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Warning: Book not for people younger than like 16!

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. I’m not a huge huge fan of Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels and at first I thought this would be the same as that, but it wasn’t. This books is a mash up of the best of USA network’s shows. It has a little bit of White Collar, In Plain Sight, Covert Affairs and even Burn Notice. (Sorry I watch a lot of television). My only problem with this book is the fact that it is an adult book. Don’t get me wrong, I can handle a little smut every now and again but it’s not my most favorite of things to read about. I still live in the Teen and Kids fantasy section of the bookstore most of the time.

The main premise of this book is mostly the same as the premise for White Collar with a few twists. Nick Fox is a con-man who is being perpetually chased by this one FBI agent named Kate O’Hare, kind of like the Peter and Neal relationship, but she finally catches him in the most amazing way possible (read to find out). The only problem is that this captivity doesn’t last and to Kate’s surprise, was never meant to. Nick “escapes” and continues to be hunted by the FBI but Kate isn’t on the case. However, this being her life’s work and all, Kate can’t let it go and she finds herself on an assignment she could never have dreamed was possible. The FBI decides to secretly use Nick and Kate to do all of the things the FBI can’t to catch the bad guy. So the fed. and the criminal team up to pull off what turns out to be the most elaborate con yet.

They’re after someone who’s gotten away with over half a billion dollars of embezzled money with a feeble crew and an insane plan. There’s parachuting, explosions, fake drug cartels, and Toblerones. Everything you could ever want from Covert Affairs, and Burn Notice with quirky and sexy main characters reminiscent of Neal Caffery (Matt Bomer) and Mary Shannon (Mary McCormick), mashed up with Nikola Tesla (Sanctuary) and Helen Magnus (Sanctuary).

I guarantee that you will fall in love with them faster than you fall in love with cute cat videos on the internet.

Whodunnit?

So apparently there are colors on WordPress now… I didn’t know that.

Whodunnit?

Anyway, There’s this new tv show on ABC called Whodunnit? and I must say I’m totally nerding out about it. This show is basically CSI meets Clue meets Survivor or something. I’m not really sure how to classify it. But it started out with 13 people who show up at a mansion with a butler Giles. They seemingly have no idea what they’re there for and then one of the 13 dies. This is the premise for the entire show.

One of the original 13 was the killer, hidden among the crowd of people, his/her identity unknown to the rest. The rest of the 13 have to figure out how the victim was murdered down to the last twitch of the killers hand, and if they get it wrong the one who gets it the most wrong is the next to be killed. The watchers don’t know who the killer is anymore than the victims do, and the deaths are more than they seem. This is honestly the best puzzle/figure-it-out kind of game I’ve seen yet, and the Forensic Chemistry nerd in me is loving this more than I’d like to admit.

So as far as tv shows go, I would give this one a 9 out of 10, for keeping me entertained but being a little too cheesey for my liking.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1)Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is the first of the series Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard. It follows the lives of 4 teenage girls who have a lot of secrets to hide, but one thing links them together. Alison DiLaurentis. She was the girl to be before she disappeared at the end of their 7th grade year. The girl that kept the four of them together, but also the one that each told their secrets that they didn’t want the others to know.

Aria: In love with her English now had even bigger secret to keep. But this one involved her dad. Emily: Could she have been in love with Alison way back when? Who is she in love with now? Spencer: Always stealing things from her sister, but did she take things too far? Hanna: How did she really get that skinny? There was only one person who knew; or so they thought. Could A be Alison come to haunt them? Or is it someone new?

This book was good, not exactly like the tv show, but that’s to be expected. I’m not quite sure if it’s better than the tv show though. There were some places where I didn’t like certain phrasing that Shepard used, places that stood out as bad. Normally that wouldn’t bother me in a fantastic book, but here it did. As far as plot goes however it was just as good as the show and it kept me turning the pages which awarded it the 4 stars. I read this in a very small amount of time for someone who has college to contend with, and I desperately want to read more. I don’t normally like realistic fiction type books, but these have become my new guilty pleasure of sorts. Definitely recommended if you want a guilty pleasure.

Book Blogging

Okay so I recently put my blog on a list of book bloggers, and honestly it’s pretty cool. So for the next few posts it’s going to be mostly book reviews. Right now I’m reading the first book that someone requested I write a review of, and so far I must say it’s really interesting. It’s called Blood Skies by Steven Montano. It sounds like something straight out of a Stargate show.  It is set up very interestingly so far. Granted, I’m still in the prologue but as of right now it’s following a disembodied entity that is observing an almost futuristic city. With the disembodied entity is another one, a female, and so far that’s it.

There was one quote though that I really liked, and will probably be in the full review later with this long description as to how it reminded me of Stargate and lots of nerdy stuff. Anyway, the book is really good so far. More of a review to come.

The Quote

“Her form corrodes, reforms, comes together once more in a shimmering rain that trails him like a spectral wake.”

Gregor the Overlander

Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles, #1)Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was so much better than The Hunger Games, it kind of makes me wonder what happened with The Hunger Games. It’s the same author, but the writing styles are so different! So is the plot line.

It follows the adventure of Gregor and his little sister Boots, two kids who live in New York City. From the start of the story you learn that Gregor’s father is missing, and it seems that he just up and left. But Gregor soon discovers that that is not the case when his sister crawls through a rather large air vent in their laundry room. This air vent leads them to a place far underneath the City that seems almost like Hollow Earth from the Sanctuary tv series. It is a vast underground place made completely of stone.

It here that Gregor finds a city full of people, but they don’t quite look the same as us. They are called the Underlanders, as opposed to Overlanders which is what Gregor is. They introduce Gregor to a prophecy that holds the key to what happened to his father. But I won’t go into that because you’ll have to find that out for yourselves.

I personally liked this a lot. It made me laugh, and cry and a whole bunch of other things.

Nerdfighters, Kelly Clarkson, and other stuff

Alright so I have not been very active in anything, whether it be this blog, the roleplay sites that I’m on, and tumblr. Well that is because I have been watching Vlogbrothers videos like a lot of them because there are 977 and I don’t even know how many of those I’ve watched… I think it’s at least a hundred or more. So that is what I’ve been doing and is what I will continue to do until I have watched them all. (I will post links to every single thing I talk about in the bottom of this post). Now the thing called Nerdfighters is basically a huge community of their fans which can be found in multiple ways. There’s youtube, the ning, and a whole bunch of other cool things. I absolutely love them and you should go watch videos because they are fun, granted watching all of them might be a little crazy so don’t do that unless you don’t like sleep or have an insane amount of time.

Alright so that is only one thing that I’ve been doing for the majority of the week is earning Kellebrities points. They are part of Kelly Clarkson’s new rewards system that will give you cool prizes and stuff. Which is awesome because I’m a HUGE fan and cannot afford awesome stuff after already buying all of her cds (which are also in the prizes). From this, I got the most amazing google chrome skin ever! Unless of course someone has one that features any of the things that are in the picture above my homepage.

As before I mentioned that I have other things to be doing, like roleplaying and tumbling (I don’t know if that’s a real word or not but I’m making it one so it is). All of the sites that I roleplay with are on the sidebar in little picture link things (the sites call them affs.). My tumblr is crazy so I wouldn’t really recommend looking at it unless you want to be drawn into my insanity. But if you do there’s a link in the links section of this post.

I also have books that I’m reading, and books I am writing with Camp NaNoWriMo, and grad. parties because I just graduated high school, and college stuff to do, and movies that I’ve seen, and other stuff like that. So yeah I’ve been busy, also there are charities that I’ve been trying to raise money for (unsuccessfully might I add).

That’s what I’ve been doing, and this post is very uninteresting and a huge block of text but I don’t really care because if you love me you’ll read it anyway. The aforementioned links are just below this sentence in a list, and have a wonderful rest of your day and hopefully you’ll see more posts if you care.

Links:

Also, since I have shoved so many different teasers about stuff I’m writing, if you want like a chapter posted as a post, I will consider it just comment on this and tell me that you would like to read something and then I’ll make a poll and put it in a post and you can vote on which you would like to read. But for now: comments make for a happy blogger so comment!

Sailor Moon

Alright so I’ve been seeing a lot of revamped Sailor Moon fan stuff lately and I was just curious. Is there a reason for this? Are they starting to show the series again? Or is it just because the Manga are being reprinted in the United States again? I know I just bought the new apparel that Hot Topic is selling like the hoodie that I’m wearing and the t-shirt I’m wearing.

So tell me: What’s with all the hype? and Does anyone know where I can get the series on DVD for the English Dub.? Links would be nice.

Sherlock

So my friend has been ever so helpful in getting me hooked on yet ANOTHER tv show. This one? Sherlock. It is so amazing, even though I’ve only seen four of the six episodes. Yeah, well this is going to be interesting, now to watch the rest and wait for the new season. Yay sites that let me watch things at all hours of the night.

In other news, we have also been watching Sanctuary which is an amazing show as well, though it gets more hilarious and fanfiction worthy after you get to Nikola Tesla’s role in the show. Yes I said Nikola Tesla, who is played by the magnificent Jonathon Young, and is just awesome. But by all means don’t take my word for it you should go watch it for yourself and fall in love with Teslen like I did. (yes for those of you who know what that means, I do ship Teslen. I also ship Henry/Tesla though I ship Teslen more)

Well for now time to go back to puttering around on the internet. Those of you reading this go watch Sherlock or Sanctuary, and no like always I was not paid for promotion so get that out of your head right now. Hm… perhaps I shall also write fanfiction like my friend is currently doing…. yup sounds good to me….

New Years

So it’s new years eve, and I’m sitting here on my computer doing absolutely nothing… So I figured I’d post about what my crazy family is doing. My sister has two friends over and they are being entirely crazy. At first they were sitting on the floor and watching “I Still Psycho” or whatever it’s called, the new iCarly episode. And they were like SCREAMING… It was more scary than the show was.

Anyway so now I’m watching the two parts to the Sanctuary season finale. I LOVE it so much! First you have a depressed Nikola, who is so adorable and in need of a hug from Helen. Though I do feel bad for Henry, he has to deal with him. And then there’s that kiss, but that’s giving too much away, so I’ll stop there.

I hope you’re having a better New Year’s Eve, or New Year’s Day for those in time zones that are ahead of us. I shall be watching Sanctuary and reading books in hopes to finish a few before the new year. Why? Well because of the Goodreads challenge that you can find by clicking on the picture in my sidebar. Well Happy 2012 all, see you in the new year!
