Project: NaNoWriMo 2019

It’s that time of year again everybody! The time where we stretch out our brains, max out our creativity, and eat our weight in Halloween candy or drink it in warm beverages. For this year, because I’ve been watching so many D&D campaigns I’m kind of playing with that sort of feeling. Right now it’s sort of switching between modern and fantasy type worlds. Maybe once I get a little further into it my brain will connect the two together. It also doesn’t really have any sort of structure at the moment. Normally, I have distinct chapter/character perspective set ups. But this time I just started writing in scenes.

This year is also different, not only because NaNoWriMo has changed their website, but also because I have switched up the way I do my NaNo tracking journal. For my journal I have taken something that Kerri Maniscalco had shared as her “How to Beat Writer’s Block” go-to. After every chapter, or every writing session she will write a quick summary of what she had done in a word document or outline so that she knew where she had left off. So I’ve started doing a day by day break down chart in a sketch book style bullet journal.

On the chart I write my word count goal for the day, the total project word count goal, and what NaNo says I need to write for the day to stay on track. At the end of the day I will write what I actually achieved for those statistics, and then I will write a quick summary of what I wrote that day broken down by scenes. Then at the beginning of the next day I will take a few minutes and plot out what my plans for the day are on a different page. that can contain summaries, descriptions, maps etc. So far I’ve found this to be very helpful in setting up my mind for the day ahead and remembering what happened in the days behind.

I personally use a sketchbook because it allows me to make the pages into what ever I want and gives me space to draw and make whatever I want it to be. Another thing I was very interested in trying out, but ultimately decided against it was The Rook and The Raven’s D&D journals, or Critical Role’s Cobalt Soul journal. Each had pre-planned pages for different things. I just liked the idea of being able to draw in my own boxes and heading spaces better than a pre-planned journal. If you would like to see what my journal looks like leave a comment or message me on the Facebook page (link in the About Me) and I’ll post pictures to the page.

Now let’s get into the new NaNoWriMo website. With every change there is always something unsettling that someone, if not everyone, is going to hate at first. For me that was the new Stats page. NaNoWriMo had updated their statistics page to make sure that you get a more real time, interactive, and informative writing experience. For the most part, this new page works and is TOTALLY awesome. But there are still some kinks to be worked out.

A while back I reviewed a writing site called Writely. This application website basically timed you when you wrote in a document that was in their app. It added the critiquing feature of Scribophile together with the timed writing style of any of those zen writing or Write or Die type websites and programs. The main problem with Writely was you had to write in their document for the timer to work and it COULD NOT be accessed through a phone very easily. Why am I bringing this up? Well, Writely would have been a very good tool for NaNoWriMo style word sprints if it had some of the features that NaNoWriMo already had and some of the bug fixes were actually worked out and now, NaNo seems to agree. So NaNo stepped up their game a little with their new site relauch.

For those who have spent time learning how to use it, the new site has some really cool and handy features. It’s much easier to communicate with your communities. It has notifications for when people have replied to you. And it forces people to request to be your buddy instead of just stalking someone’s pages and being a creep. It also added a timer feature. This will passively time your writing while making noise marking each time milestone you’ve reached. It still can’t be used on a phone browser, but for someone who writes using pen and paper usually, it is much better for timing your writing than an in browser word document.

This also allows NaNoWriMo to more accurately give you your writing statistics. Things like what time of day you write the most, how fast you’re writing and what type of mood you were in when you were writing. Because every time you add a writing session you have the option of inputting all of these details. It’s a fun new way to track your progress on the site and show your tiny community of writers how you’re doing.

Other things don’t quite work the way I had hoped they would. Things like the edit word count by day feature and the choose whatever word count over 50k feature are no longer available on the site. This is a little bit sad, as those were some of the features that I enjoyed on the old site. But I’m still excited to see the site grow and evolve as all of the growing pains and kinks are worked out.

And so, on that note, I will leave you for the day and wish you luck on Day 3 of NaNoWriMo.

Personal: August Recap

So after writing up my July recaps I decided to also write up an August TBR list and an August To Try Out List. However, life caught up to me and so I’m still going to post it, but I’m going to edit it into a recap of sorts instead. So let’s kick things off with my TBR.

TBR

These first books on the list were the books that I had started in a previous month and just wanted to finish this month if I had the time.

TBFinished:

  1. Windwitch By Susan Dennard
    1. I had started this book last month immediately after finishing Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. By the end of July, I was just about halfway through the book so it wasn’t hard to finish this one. I am now so invested in this world that I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of reading about it. Since finishing this book, I have also started Sightwitch which is the short story in between Windwitch and Bloodwitch. Sightwithch was not initially on this TBR list because I didn’t at the time have the book since it was an ebook only.
      1. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29939390-windwitch?ac=1&from_search=true
  2. Dune by Frank Herbert
    1. This book is really big so I’m just sort of reading it in pieces. As much as I can get through in each month. I didn’t read any of it for this month so it will definitely be on the September TBR list that I post on the 1st.
      1. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39970217-dune
  3. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
    1. I started reading this as soon as it came out and before the Barnes & Noble Book Club night. But I never quite absorbed the full ending of the book because of how fast I was reading it. I was forcing myself to rush for the Book Club and I wanted to finish the book quickly. But now I went back and restarted and started reading it slowly this time. But then I started reading The Witchlands series. So this also did not get finished this time.
      1. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24233708-an-absolutely-remarkable-thing?ac=1&from_search=true

TBStarted:

  1. Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard
    1. I did actually end up starting this towards the end of this month. So this is going to move up to my September TBF list.
      1. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39863277-bloodwitch
  2. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
    1. I had seen this on a BUNCH of Bookstagram account pages and I thought I’d check it out. I purchased it but didn’t start it yet.
      1. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34728667-children-of-blood-and-bone?from_search=true
  3. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
    1. This was another one that is on EVERY Bookstagram account I follow. So I thought I’d see what all the fuss was about.
      1. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42201395-sorcery-of-thorns?from_search=true

TBReRead:

  1. Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
    1.  Kerri Maniscalco’s new book comes out in September I believe and so I am super excited to start reading the series from the beginning again.
      1. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28962906-stalking-jack-the-ripper

That was my short list for August, and the progress that I made on them. Obviously, my To Read List is much bigger and will continue to grow. So September’s will build off of that. Here are some things I had wanted to try out in August:

TTO:

  1. You-ology Exfoliating Mask: I had hear that exfoliating masks are really good for your face and getting rid of gunk that has seeped into your pores. Now, my day job is really dirty. Boxes are disgusting. So I really need something to take care of my face. The Bioclarity that I use is very good at keeping my face clean and hydrated but I needed something a little more aggressive to combat all of the layers of gunk on my face. I’ve only used this product three times so far and it has helped make my face softer and smoother. But I’ll keep you posted as I keep using the product.
    1. https://www.youniqueproducts.com/AmyZukas/products/view/US-16204-06#.XWxfdChKiUk
  2. Relics and Rarities: This is a show by Geek & Sundry, and it’s another RPG campaign stream. It is a fascinating concept. It basically arcs the story around what artifacts they choose at the beginning of the episode, and there’s a new guest star every week. They are still trying to complete an overall goal, but it’s not the same set up as Critical Role is. It’s very quirky. I like it.
    1. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7atuZxmT954B-AtfJsw_YbULHL_L7J8z
  3. Webtoon: This is an app that allows you to read online comics. An author I follow on Instagram (Alexandra Bracken), had mentioned that a webcomic called Lore Olympus existed that might mean her latest novel title might have to change. When she mentioned it, I immediately googled it to see what she was talking about because the description sounded like something I had seen pictures of online. So I signed up for the Webtoon app and I was not disappointed! Lore Olympus is SO GOOD! I would definitely recommend this webcomic if you haven’t read it yet.
    1. https://www.webtoons.com/en/
  4. Chokers by Paparazzi Accessories: Paparazzi came out with some pretty cute chokers recently and I really want to get some. I’m just not sure which one to get. I sort of want the cute silver ones, but I also want the corded ones. So I’m not sure which one I’m going to get. But I definitely want one.
    1. https://paparazziaccessories.com/314428/
  5. Calisto6: This is another RPG stream that I wanted to start watching but I never got fully into it. It’s set in a futuristic sci-fi version of L.A. It’s a very different concept, from the description. So it will go on into my September TTO list.
    1. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7atuZxmT957wz-a95ESEGW7de6SgR9is

So those were all of the things that I had wanted to try out for last month. Now that classes have started, we’ll see how September’s goals will get accomplished.

Personal: July Recap Part 1

So I always see people online talking about their favorites for the month. So I thought I’d take the time to write out a few of mine. I think at the end of this post I will also make an August To Try list and an August TBR. But maybe that will be a separate post. I haven’t decided yet. This might just be a summary of what I’ve used the most. It’ll be broken up into different parts.

Part 1: Books

  1. Dune by Frank Herbert
    1. The first one I started reading back in June, but continued reading in July, is Dune by Frank Herbert. I know that everyone is going to say that I’m only reading it because of the movie and that I’m not a real fan. But this book came out 31 years before I was born so I would say the fact that it has still captured my interest after all this time is quite a feat. If we’re being honest though, this book as been on my “To Read” list since I saw it on the shelves in my bookstore a few years back. But it was the movie that finally got me to read the book. It’s not that I didn’t want to read it before, I just was reading other things that my friends wanted to discuss at the time and that is really what drives me to read something or see something. I need someone to discuss things with. So that’s why Dune was book number 1 of the month.
    2. Goodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39970217-dune
  2. Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
    1. This book is the first book in the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard. While reading this book I achieved one of the fastest read times I’ve had in a really long time. If I had read this straight through, I could have finished it in less than 1 day. It’s also such a cool concept for a book. It’s got its own cool lore and plays off of the environmental witch type of magic set up but with a twist. It’s really quite interesting and I can’t wait to write a review for it. It also relates to book 3 of the month.
    2. Goodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25187640
  3. Windwitch by Susan Dennard
    1. This is the second book in the Witchlands series by Susan Dennard and I had only just started this book towards the end of July so it definitely is the first on my August TBR. So far it is a little slower than Truthwitch was. But it’s still keeping me captivated.
    2. Goodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29939390-windwitch

Part 2: Internet Shows/Adventures

  1. “A Hole in the Plan” Critical Role |Campaign 2, Episode 42: Geek and Sundry
    1. I have finally made it to episode 42 of Critical Role Campaign 2. This series is so good. You don’t really have to watch Campaign 1 in order to be invested in Campaign 2 but I would highly recommend both.  This is an online D&D Campaign that is live streamed. It features Matthew Mercer, Travis Willingham, Marisha Ray, Liam O’Brien, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, and Taliesin Jaffe. All of their characters are so easy to get attached to. They’re funny and interesting, moody and heartfelt. You grow with them as they go through each new task. It’s basically just like listening to an audio book but with the characters acting in real time. SPOILERS AHEAD:  In this current episode, they are with a band of pirates on a quest for a magical orb that grants special powers to its owner. It’s really interesting, it has spurred most of my other recent interests. From getting me hooked on Loot Crate, to introducing me to Tor Books, and even rekindling my interest in writing, reading, and blog posting. It’s really been a good creative boost for me.
    2. Link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQxD0jjAE7PsWoaCrs0EkBH2
  2. #TheLuminaries by Susan Dennard
    1. So this is a new thing for me at least, and I think for most of the internet. Susan Dennard is the author of the Witchlands series, and the Something Strange and Deadly series, and she has started a Twitter “Choose Your Own Adventure” for one of her books that she was going to publish. It is amazing. It’s such a good story, I’m invested. This story has me going back to Twitter everyday to check this thread. It’s so fun to see where it’s going to turn, to see what is going to divide our decisions. It’s so fun to interact with other fans, other participants, to read their comments and join discussions. It’s really such a good community. I love it so much.
    2. Link: https://twitter.com/stdennard/status/1135346704142819328

So this is Part 1 of my July recap. The rest will be in part 2 it’s just less organized and more of a Miscellaneous Stuff kind of post. So that will be Part 2. Then will come the August TBR/TTO List with products I want to try in August or things I’m going to read in August. This took way longer to write than I thought it would so everything’s behind. September’s will be much more put together. You can also expect more reviews from me in the near future assuming that the classes I’m taking again won’t interfere. See you soon for Part 2.

Discovery: Younique Make-up Company

Younique is a concierge make-up company kind of like Mary Kay or Pampered Chef in design. You have one seller that can do parties for you and explain products and the person hosting earns perks. The person selling can also recruit, which is how I started selling and why I’m writing this post.

One of my friends from high school started selling Younique on Facebook and my first thought was ‘Oh great, another person who’s going to bombard my feed with crap.’ But then I started watching her live videos and bought the make-up to support her. From there I was hooked. This is just as good as anything I’ve ever gotten from Sephora or CVS or any of the places that I’ve bought make-up from.

I will say it is closer to a Sephora price point, and maybe that’s not what most can afford. But it is totally worth the price.

So when I started buying from her I had just done it to support her because I already had a job and wasn’t looking for a new one or a new expense. But now, probably six months later, I’ve found myself buying the Presenter’s kit and coming on board as a seller. These things can be addicting but so far I’m not sorry that I’ve done it. I could use some extra cash, and I could also use some me time. This gives me both.

I have included my selling link on my about me page. I’ll include my selling link and my join link at the bottom of this post. But please know this will not change my blog. It will still be mostly book centric. I just wanna have a little fun.

Review: Writely App

So there’s this new website that has been live for, a couple of months by now I believe, called Writely. It’s a subscription based website that encourages you to write everyday. It has a forum for sharing writing and other discussions, a points system to reward you for writing, and tutorial writings that teach you how to do different types of writing. A few people on the forum said they were very excited for the app to be released and couldn’t wait for it to launch. I hadn’t had that kind of anticipation for it so this will be more of a casual review of it.

I liked the idea of this app when I first signed up to beta it, but its functionality doesn’t live up to what I had hoped. Granted, it is still in beta so it may get better with other people and other feedback. The app isn’t a phone app so it’s hard to use when you don’t have access to a computer, which describes most of my day. It also makes it hard to actually achieve the word count I’d like to for the day because I can’t access the web app everywhere I go.

I think with a few adjustments or with the addition of a phone or desktop app this could be a really useful tool for most people. I also think that with the addition of features like Scribophile has the interactive features of the site could also help a lot of people with editing and such. Before anyone who uses Writely complains that neither of these are the point of Writely; I know. I know that the point of the app is to get as many words written and projects finished as possible. But finishing the project is only half the battle. If you’re actually going to do anything with it, besides have it sit and collect digital dust on a hard drive somewhere, you need to edit it and send it out.

So do I think it’s worth checking out the free trial and maybe using if you have a specific project you want to get accomplished in a certain amount of time? Yes. Do I think it is a program I will pay for over a long period of time? No. I think I will eventually find that it does not benefit me as much as it would need to for the amount that it costs.

Disclaimer 1: I have not been paid for this review. I do not get paid for anything I post.

Disclaimer 2: I do not edit any of my posts. They are all just stream of consciousness kind of things. So if they are worded poorly or if they have typos, that is why. Usually it is because my brain moves faster than my fingers and forms five different versions of the same sentence resulting in a combination of all of them. Sometimes it’s just that I’m tired and/or distracted by the other people who live in my house. The later is the case for this particular post.

Scribophile

So Camp NaNoWriMo just ended and as usual they have rolled out their winners perks. Unlike usual I actually qualified as a winner this time around (Woo!), and I’ve decided to check out the winners’ perks. One of the winners’ perks is 30% off a premium membership for a website called Scribophile.

Scribophile is a writer community for serious writers who want serious feedback. It’s not for the people who just post to get views, or post for the fun of it (although those are there too they are not the majority). This site has a contribute before benefits setup where you must help out other members with their writing before you can get enough karma points to post a work of your own. It’s really an ingenious system. It means you can’t take advantage of the community.

When you first sign up you are awarded two karma points. It then walks you through how to set up your profile and participate in the community. Once you’ve gone through the orientation you pretty much have free reign on the site. You can introduce yourself in the forums or jump right in and critique a work for someone. So far I’ve only tried out the critiquing and the scratchpad. I am particularly fond of the inline critique format where you can read the work and basically write in the margins, then post it for the author to see. It’s interesting because you get to see everyone’s work and help them and watch the piece evolve into something new. It’s very interesting and I would recommend checking it out.

BookCrossing

So I was looking through my Goodreads shelves and updating the ones I own and the ones I don’t own on my shelves and I decided to finally look up what that BookCrossing ID thing meant. What I found was that BookCrossing is a website where you can custom print book plates with an ID number on it. This ID can be used to track where the book has gone over the years. You can even release your own books into the wild.

It looks like the idea behind this was to make a public library with a world wide community involvement instead of just a local community thing. There are also no due dates, or late fees. You can keep the book as long as you want and release it whenever, wherever, and to whoever you want. You can write reviews and do pretty much all of the same things with BookCrossing as you can with Goodreads. You can even connect BookCrossing to Goodreads. But with BookCrossing you can track books you release, read reviews on the books you release, or see where the book you found is from. It’s pretty cool.

I made a profile for it, and a custom book plate that is released for public purchase. (There are free book plates or ones you can purchase.) My BookCrossing profile is under tonks4life, I’m sure you can find me with that. I just thought it was a cool thing. If any of you do sign up for this site I believe they have a referrer section on the profile so feel free to add me to that!

Since I know a lot of people find me because of the book reviews I used to do I’ll point this out. This site seems like a really cool way to market or spread word about your books. If you have print copies that you’re trying to get reviewed or that you’re selling on your own personal website, or even if you have them in bookstores you might want to buy a few book plates and put them in your books. It might spread word faster and to more people. (Maybe ask permission before placing it in bookstore copies that are waiting to be sold.)

Anyway, have fun sharing your books! Or reading them. Whichever.

Writing Prompts

Okay so, I posted something about this on my writing blog but I figured I should post this here too. I’m super bored and would love writing prompts because the site I used to get mine from has been sort of lax with the prompt up keep. So if you can think of any prompts that would be fun or interesting it’d be cool if you submitted them to my Ask Box. The Ask Box can be found here.

If you wanna see the result of the prompt they’ll be posted here or here. Thanks! I’ll be around, probably posting a book review or two soon.

Kobo Mini

I am not being paid to say this! (I’m not being paid to say anything on this blog. Would it be nice? Yes, but it’s not happening).

So I’ve had the free Kobo app for a very long time. I got it because Borders was advertising it and was selling their eReaders for some time (before it closed of course). Well, after Borders went away I still had the Kobo app, but no real way to get a eReader to read the books on other than my laptop. 1.) eReaders in general were way too expensive 2.) I still preferred physical books. 3.) I didn’t have anywhere to buy the Kobo and I wasn’t getting a Kindle or a Nook because their books are way too expensive and their eReaders were even more expensive. But then just this past year the Kobo Mini came out and I swear it was love at first sight.

The Kobo Mini was nice because it was a touch screen, it was small (only a little bit bigger than an iPod Touch), and it had an anti-glare/anti-fingerprint screen. The best part about it however, is that it costed less than my cell phone did at the time. This eReader has web browsing capabilities, games, books (obviously), and other awesome features. Now you’re probably wondering why (since I got it five months ago) I am writing this now. Well, I have been receiving multiple requests for reviews and most of them are eBooks, and most of them are Kindle eBooks.

I always knew that the Kobo could handle ePub books and PDF files and .docx files, along with multiple picture files. But what I didn’t know until yesterday was that it also holds Mobi files. Apparently, this is the type of file that the Kindle apps use, or at least are capable of using them. That means that I can now carry Kindle books on my Kobo Mini. that is EXTREMELY convenient and amazing so I thought I’d share. Plus this thing is amazing and I love it and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an eReader but doesn’t want to pay a ton of money and carry something tablet sized around. (I mean come on if I wanted a tablet sized thing I’d buy a tablet, it’d probably cost less and do more).

The website for the free desktop app and other information on this product is: Kobo
